Drunk Driving: Why Not The Gov. Pay

Compansations To the Victims Family

I Commence this “ Open Letter Blog Post Series …..”with my first opening letter offering this tribute to Peter Romano, 44, a construction site supervisor, was run down as he stepped into a Bronx street to wave on a delivery vehicle on july 17, 2004. Its lattest update on Sunday, September 16th 2007 in the website: http://www.nydailynews.com/boroughs/bronx/2007/09/16/2007-09-16_dwi_death_spurs_wife_of_04_victim_to_wri-1.html

There are hundreds of thousand of people who fall victims to the drunk driving, many being tragically killed fatally injured crippled and devastated for life! To all of them I pay my tribute in this first open letter in the name of Peter Romano. My condolences also goes to the victims families the near and dear once for the anguish, suffering and the devastation they had to undergo as the result of all those deadly drunk driving incident.

Now let me come to the main point that I would like to highlight in this issue. One of the main difficulty expressed by the brewing wife Marie Romano had to face is; Peter Romano had no life insurance, which really hurt the family financially. She said;"Every single day is a struggle. I have to call in a lot of favors”.

Now let me straight away come to my main question point. Why don’t the Gov. pay for the poor families of the victims of the drunk driving? Not as a favor but I thinks it is the victims his/her families right to get!

Let me explain why? The Gov. collects huge sums of money daily by the taxing those Standard Alcohol Drinks (SADs), which it licenses for the public consumption. Consuming it most probably made that “man” inadvertantly drunk and drive, which caused that fatal accident and killed Ramano! Now my qestion is; don’t the Gov. have any responsibilty in this regard to pay some reasonable amont to the victims or their families from their alcohol tax revenues?

The Gov. authoriteis try to avoid their responsibility by putting the total blame on the drunk driver. They say; it is totally the responsibility of the alcohol drinkers specially those who after its consumption find or feel a urgent need of driving therefore not to get into its excessive consumption or keep their BAC below the given DWI limit! They proclaim that; “There are no such safe or dangerous alcohol drinks, all alcohol drinks high or low are somehow equally dangerous”! Therefore there is no real basis to withdraw the licence of the those of alcohol drinks pointing out that they contain high alcohol content so dangerous for the public consumption on the other hand to alow only those alcohol drinks pointing out that they contain low alcohol content therefore considerably safe!

However the authorities above statement is totally misleading the public! The fact is that the alcohol epidemiological research survey points out that almost of all those alcohol or the alcoholism problems, which includes the drunk driving happens as the result of consuming the high alcohol content drinks (that includes the standard “beer” having around 5% alcohol), which the authoritis licence for the public consumption in the name of SADs. They are extremely dangerous because they potentially lead its drinkers into excessive alcohol consumption or the drunkenness. Drunk driving is one of its manifestations.

On the other hand there are no fundamental research evidences or statistics that basically points out that the consumption of Low Alcohol Drinks (LADs) having alcohol around 2% or less, results or causes any of these alcohol drunk-driving incidents specially its accidents! Therefore the authorities indeed have the safe options of licensing only the low alcohol drinks for the public consumption and to cancel the licenses of all those extremely dangerous higher alcohol content drinks. This would have mostly prevented the drunk driving accidents and Peter Romano and many like him becoming its victims! Therefore it is the authorities irresponsible or the fraudulent conduct of licensing of those potentially dangerous SADs’ for the public consumption that primarily cause or results in the drunk driving and its deadly accidents. Therefore the Gov. should immediately to pay the compensation money for the dead victims families!

Finally let me ask a basic question. If the authorities claim that majority of the Drinkers consume the alcohol drinks safely, moderately without needing to get into its excessive consumption than what is the need of licensing the high alcohol drinks, which potentially caters to the needs of excessive alcohol consumption of the alcohol vulnerable, gullible people? Why expose all those people to the dangers of the high alcohol drinks while the low alcohol drinks can safely fulfill the purpose of peoples moderate alcohol consumption?

Licensing that high alcohol content SAD’s for public consumption is like providing dangerous toys for the kids for their playing pleasures! Many kid by their nature play with it safely. However some kids for whatever reasons play very dangerously as they not only endanger themselves but also endanger others life even killing them. Peter Romano is one such victim.
